Pottery has always fascinated me, especially since the first time I challenged myself to turn a chunk of clay into a vessel, which wasn’t very successful to say the least. But over the past decade of producing thousands of pieces, I have come to an understanding with the clay, and that is the fact, the only limits present, are the ones you make for yourself. With this thought process in mind I took my hobby and turned it into my career, a job where I can express myself and hopefully connect with others. Pottery fills me with a sense of accomplishment and integrity, and has proven a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality.
My work typically holds a traditional value, being shape. The shapes everyone can relate too after seeing them in the movies, the mall, magazines and even their friends homes. But my mind does not allow me to settle there, so I take it to that next level visually.
Patterns and the use of contrast are my focus when designing my finished work. My use of geometric shapes and repetitious patterns leave the perfect challenge for the viewers mind. But I think the relationship between the traditional shapes and contemporary patterns makes for a pleasing conclusion when they walk away from one piece and go onto the next.
I believe my work represents not only myself, but also the world around me. There are many different sized vessels (humans) out there, and we all challenge ourselves to be different then the next. But in this mission to be different, just remember, we are all a little Funk’d Up! And the only thing we can do about it is smile, smile, smile.
